Pope Pius XII
Pope Pius XII, born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli, was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 2 March 1939 until his death in 1958. In the midst of WWII he appealed to Catholics everywhere to help the victims of the war. The CWL immediately sent $1,000 to the Pope's fund. Again, Pius XII appealed for these war victims in 1946. The CWL raised and donated $4,500 in cash and 60,000 cans of food. Today, St. Peter's CWL continues this legacy with regular donations to CNEWA (the Catholic Near East Welfare Association) which was begun by his predecessor Pius XI.
