12 days of christmas

The 12 days of Christmas (according to Christian theology) is the period from December 25 (Birth of Jesus) January 6 (the Epiphany - The coming of the Magi). Fr. Hal Stockert, wrote a short composition in 1982 called “Origin of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’: An Underground Catechism”. Why you ask did he do this? In England from 1558 to 1829, Catholics were prohibited from practicing their faith by law, private OR public. It was a crime to BE a Catholic. The Twelve Days of Christmas” was written as one of the “catechism songs” to help young Catholics learn about their faith through memory, because to be caught with anything in writing showing that you belonged to the Catholic faith could not only get you imprisoned, it could get you hanged, or shortened by a head - or hanged, drawn and quartered…

So follow along for the next 12 days and I will post which each verse means. Also the National Catholic Register website has a more in depth story.
